Idiom - An expression that is peculiar to itself grammatically, or cannot be understood from the individual meanings of its elements.

IE: If someone has “ants in their pants”, they’re excited… they don’t literally have ants crawling in their pants.

  • Regional speech or dialect.
  • A specialized vocabulary used by a group of people. (ie: American English speakers)
  • Also referred to as idiomatic expressions.

These types of expressions are especially difficult for non-native speakers to understand, but make perfect sense to native speakers.
